Vintage Lock & Key + Norton Review + Android Tablet Giveaway

A couple of days ago I was asked to try out a new software tool called Norton Identity Safe. It's a pretty cool tool and I thought it might be something that you guys would be interested in as well!

If you have concerns about online security, and I think most of us do, this will help! If you're like me, you may have 5 bajillion passwords and multiple user names that you use for all of the various sites that you sign in to. On top of that you may sign in with different devices, like your computer, laptop or your smartphone. It can be difficult to keep track of it all and pretty darn nearly impossible to remember them. Norton Identity Safe provides an easier, safer solution to help us out.

Basically you download the software and register with one master user name and password. Then as you're surfing around, it saves all the other passwords and user names that you've been using on your favorite sites, as you go to them. So you only have to do this once, for each of the sites that you frequent. Then it remembers the info and the next time you go there, it fills the info in for you! Bing! It's like a password Fairy!
It can do some other stuff too like, fill out forms with your name, address and credit card info. You can store notes. And my favorite... it will give you a warning when you enter a fraudulent site! It even works if you change browsers, and there are also Apps that you can download for your Smartphone or your Tablet, so you're covered on the go too!

I've been using it for several days now and it really is a time saver not to mention the peace of mind you get, knowing that your passwords are locked up tight!

I've also tried out the handy dandy Password Generator on the Norton site. It randomly selects more secure passwords for you. And you can filter it to match the requirements that you need to meet. For example if you need a password with 2 numbers, 8 letters and 2 punctuation marks, you can set it to create that for you. Nice!

Norton Identity Safe is currently Free for Download (and it stays free once you download it, no strings attached!). You can Click HERE to grab it and get started!

  1. The key and lock graphics are perfect for this. I am at that age where all of a sudden I can have a complete brain lock - I can't access the information I need - sometimes it is a name of someone I have know for many years and sometimes it is when I am sitting at the computer entering in the user name and then......yes, a blank.....nothing.....I have to get out my cheat sheet and look up my password. Please help me password fairy -

  2. Hi Karen
Good timing for me.... Recently I forgot my itunes password, couldn't update anything, couldn't download, basically I was stuck and when I typed in my email I couldn't retrieve it because I have a new email and can't access the old one where they sent the hint.... Yikes so to make matters worse I opened a new itunes to fix the problem... NO!
Now all the apps and songs are on the old itunes which I cant access to save my life. And did you ever try to contact anyone out there in itunes world??? This problem went on for months until I made my fifth trip to the Apple store. I don't know what they did but they fixed things for me... some kind of magic.
I now have my passwords written on a piece of paper in my office... if I keep the place clean and can find it... The Norton download sounds like the perfect solution to me! Thanks for the heads up!

  4. Yikes! I can never remember my name and password for a seldom used site, I have it written down, but I have to find the written page when I want to access the site. It has been suggested more than once to use a program such as this.

  5. My problem is that I have so many passwords, sometimes it is hard to match up the username to my password! I think the worst one is my old email account which I have no use for anymore. I made it in high school, and have entirely forgotten the password. No matter how I dig my brain, I never seem to be able to remember.

  6. First, I love the lock and key Karen, thanks so much for those!
Second - a Norton product that does all that for free? I'm astounded, and grateful. I'll definitely be checking it out, thank you!

  8. Since different sites sometimes have different requirements for the strength of your password, I now have a notebook where I record the user name and the variation of my password used for each site. It's a bit of a pain to have to look it up, but it is easier than starting over.

Thank you for all the fabulous graphics you provide AND the fact that you provide good sized images which many other sites do not.

  9. I changed my passwords last year and lo and behold I forgot the ones I made for the ones I made for my bank. Thought I would be clever and made up 3 new ones at one time. Not such a good idea. Maybe one at at time until I commit the new one to memory. So I had to start over on each banking / credit card location. It took so much time. I'll never do that again.

  10. A site I hadn't visited in several years became of new interest to me, but when I went to log in to my old account, I couldn't remember the password. I tried several of the current ones I use, but nada. Finally, I remembered, sadly, that the password from several years ago was a series of numbers with my dog's name in it -- a dog who recently passed away.

I'm always forgetting passwords, and I have sheets of paper with passwords scratched out as I change them. This would be incredibly helpful.

  11. My mother has the most difficult time in the world remembering her passwords. We finally had to create an excel spreadsheet to store everything in so she won't get herself locked out of everything she uses. I sent her a link to this post so that she can learn about the product, because I swear somebody who knows her personally must've invented it.

  12. We all have so many passwords to keep up with! There's no way that we can remember them all without a trick to help us. There's been several times I've had to retrieve a forgotten pasword. Luckily I've kept the same email address forever so it hasn't been a problem.

    Thanks!

  13. I actually forget or lose my passwords a lot. One time I had to call and one of the companies and get everything set back up because I could not remember the password. I have a yellow piece of paper that I have all account IDs and passwords on so that I will not forget them, what happens if I LOSE THAT!!! I did find a small "password Log" book at Barnes and Nobles...I think I need that! LOVE THE BLOG!

  14. I don't so much lose passwords as mistype them and get locked out of my bank account every few weeks... it gives me so many attempts and then I have to go through this annoying process to reset it.

  15. Your lock and key graphic is beautiful. As for passwords, between work and my home pc, I have tons of different passwords. I always forget which ones I use for everything. This software sounds like it would be quite handy.

  16. I have endless issues with one particular website. I don't use it often but when I do it's important (usually I am submitting requests for fairly sizeable reimbursements), and it invariably tells me my username and password are wrong, and I have to choose new ones, confirm them, etc. Incredibly frustrating.

  17. The bane of my existence is my AT&T account. I can't find my account and password ids through scrupulous process of elimination. I need Norton or a full time assistant/rememberer!

  18. This was created for me! I try to use only one or two user names and passwords but the different sites just won't let me. Yes I had my daught make me an excell list and that helps but I still forget to add to it and then I foget totally. I am really looking forward to trying this.

  20. Love the lock & key graphic! I may just have to try that software - it's such a pain to remember passwords you don't use often! - and I have lost count of how many times I've had to have passwords reset or new accounts created because I can't remember the password for the life of me!

  25. I work with passwords all the time, since I deal with servers and software all day long. The worst time was after I had purchased a plugin from a site that went out of business three years later. The site stayed around for those who had previously purchased the plugin, but since no one was watching the site, It was impossible to recover the password I used to purchase it with. I searched emails, and deleted files on old computers, All to no avail. In the end, I finally found a copy of the plugin on an old computer in the basement, so,...crisis averted. But all of that could have been avoided if I'd just had a system in place to keep all passwords safe and sound. I try to be more careful now.

  28. When I was still working,I had a password for getting into our main system, and then their was a seperate password for email,a seperate password for payroll files,a seperate password for securtiy cameras...and thus seperate passwords for, 4 seperate systems...and then my home computer. Plus my sons who is visually imparred his....now we up to 6...and not a one ever came up at the same time for changing..plus not allowed to use the same on payroll or security as main application....so as you can see it could get dicey...and when I went on vacation ...our passwords had to combinations of alpha and numerical, plus capitol and lower case......Thank Goodness for a call support center....because at least once a month,I had to have a reset.....Now I just keep one for retirment Heaven....

I wrote in down on a piece of paper because i knew i would never remember a 13 digit code and decided to put it where i could find it. Well not only did i not have the mind to remember the code but couldn't remember where i hide the piece of paper. I am still in the process of trying to find that piece of paper, when i can remember to look for it, too funny

  31. Oh geez, it seems like every time I have to go to a site to deal with a bill or look up some information I have to do a "forgot password" retrieval! Now I keep them in my Chrome keychain, but the security of Norton products I'm sure out-does that of the Chrome browser! Thanks for the chance =)

  32. I am notorious for losing or forgetting passwords, so much so that I now have a hard copy file of them in a mini-notepad that fits in my wallet.
The worst was when my computer crashed and I had oh so cleverly been using the automated Firefox password helper- I had to get EVERYTHING reset once I got a new computer and lost a great deal of time while doing so, not to mention added a lot of unnecessary stress into my life!

  36. I was in London, newly arrived at the airport, and couldn't remember any PINS or passwords to save my life! I was sure I'd be stuck there forever, not even able to take the train into the city, as I had no money. After sitting quietly for about 5 min, I remembered the one I needed, and was able to access my bank account.
I had kept a list in my purse, but of course, left most of the contents of the purse at home while traveling. Could have been awful!

  39. Just today I had to contact the IT department at my office because I forgot a password to one of the programs I use. Sad to say, just a couple of months ago I had to do the same thing for the same program. IT changed the password to coincide with my universal log-in, but then that changed! between all the different passwords at work and at home, it is impossible to keep them all straight!

It works great, but he never told me about the whole password thing- that will make life much easier. I wondered why that key thing kept popping up. I could not access my flickr account no matter how hard I tried, ended up having to start up a new on. Got all those photos floating around in cyberspace that I can't access! Barb

  49. I changed my passwords last year after a trip to Germany. Then this year, when I was there again, I completely forgot all of my passwords. I had to reset every password and I wrote them down. I have been home a month now, still have not found that paper and have reset passwords yet again!!!

  50. I always have trouble when the website changed the number of letters/numbers that you need. IE one website wouldnt take my whole 6 letters 1 number- it only took5 of the letters but since it was ***** I didnt notice and they didnt TELL me that! so when I tried to type in my password later- it wouldnt fit! I was surprised when I got the email with my password that wasnt what I typed in! Now I have to think which letters did they take off?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Chances are fairly good that they took off the final letter and number of your password. Most sites take the first entered information and reject that which comes after the character limit they impose.

Then I realized that they had also hijacked my ebay account and was selling stuff on my ebay account. They were not real products they were selling, just putting pictures on and write ups to get the money. Come to find out the person was from China! Never did actually catch them, though. Took ALL DAY to get THAT straightened out, and luckily, no one bought any of the products.

  56. Karen, I love the way you tied the vintage lock graphic in with this post. Perfection! And I love the term you coined -- "Password Fairy".

So, the "time" I forgot my password. Oh...so many times to choose; seems like almost a daily occurrence. Probably my most frustrating password experience is when I enter what I think is my password, get denied, and then try the other dozen passwords in my mental rolodex -- all denied. I finally click the "send me my password" lifeline and receive it via email, only to find that the password is the very first one I tried -- but I had the "CAPS LOCK" on. Grrr....

  57. After having two babies I think my brain has gone to mush! My computer often remembers my passwords for me, and I loathe the day its forgets because there is no way I will remember!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I wish I only had "a" story about forgetting my password. The worst is when it's something time-sensitive, like when I'm trying to get into my bank account or pay a bill -- like on the day it's due?? Ugh. And then you have to answer the security questions that you completed years ago -- who remembers those answers? My favorite TV show? My favorite color? That changes!

    ReplyDelete
  59. How timely is this post!
I just had a major "brain fart" while at the Apple Store yesterday picking up my 1st iPad!!
They help you set it up right there and when we were trying to set up my e-mail on the iPad...I forgot my e-mail password! That's because I rarely have to type it in, because it is "saved" on my desktop system at home. Still, I should have been able to come up with it, because I only use a few combos for my passwords, but alas...it escaped me! LOL!
I actually had this product before and really liked it, but when I got my new computer it came preinstalled with a different brand of security software, so I wasn't sure if it was okay to use the Norton with it. I will go to their site and see if I can use it with a different security suite.
    Thank-you for the review!

  96. I got locked out of my google account a while back and tried to retrieve my password by answering a series of questions that only in should know the answers to. Apparently I had answered them when I first set up the account. Funny thing is, they said I didn't answer enough of them correctly to be allowed access to my account! Go figure....I couldn't even get questions about myself right! So, I was forced to set up a new email and abandon the old one that I had had for years. Sometimes I wonder what kind of e-mails I may be missing on the old account.

  138. I had double-trouble recently at work! I got married and changed my last name in 2010. My IT people did not change my user name on any of the apps I use daily, but HR did. (We use first initial last name configurations). We are required to change passwords every 60 or 90 days, depending on application. I typically use only 2 passwords, but change the last 2 digits to mark the month I had to change it.
Needless to say, not only are my passwords out of sync - my username causes me heartburn as well! Some days, I sit for 5 minutes trying to figure out who I am and what month I changed the password. OUCH!

  140. Although most people forget passwords and we need something to help remember, I personally am reluctant to have any passwords be automatically filled in for me. I see that as a security risk since there is no 100% secure site/software in this world. They are only as good as their last attack/virus since cyber attackers are always a step ahead. If it's a site to just encrypt the pwds and store in one location, I may consider it but reluctantly still. I have worked in IT long enough to not trust any computer :)

I get the same message---your password was changed 7 months ago. So I will not use Google. I can't even use it to leave this comment. I have to sign in as anonynous!!!!

  166. Written passwords are a security breach waiting to happen, so I've never written my passwords on paper. However, trying to remember a bajillion passwords is rather hopeless too... especially the more complex, (and thus more secure) passwords, which I do try to use as much as possible.

A program such as this one is the best solution. I use a competing product that stores my passwords and protects them with a master password... in fact it has many of these same features... the main drawback being that I had to pay to get the full features of the program I use. Because of that payment, I'll probably not switch anytime soon, but the next time I'm asked to pay I'll be likely to look for a replacement.

There are times I've forgotten to enter a new password into my program and had to create a whole new account because of that forgetfulness... could not even remember which email address I used to create the original account, so the forgotten password link on the site was useless too.

  175. There is never a time that I don't appreciate that my computer stores and remembers my passwords for me. Especially when it comes to logging into my work site from home. The site is set to not allow computers to store passwords, and the passwords are assigned by the company, so they are totally random. I can never remember them! I finally had to start a written list. 177. One of my tricks for creating relatively secure passwords that I can remember is to take a familiar address and create some variable of it. The problem is that I've done that with too many addresses. So when I can't remember, I'm stuck going through every variable I can think of for any address I *may* have used, usually locking myself out of the site before I finally hit the correct combination. It's like a game of Mastermind to see if I can guess the password before my chances run out.

    ReplyDelete
  178. I use a slight variation of the same password for all of my passwords. Trouble is I cannot remember which variation I have used where. 179. My husband and I are on the road for concerts - I won't say a LOT, but we are music lovers. So, when we get to a city we don't know very well (say Atlanta or Charlotte) we will usually try to find places to eat that are well known or well reviewed. We did just that in Charlotte recently and then I went back to my cell phone to get the directions I had emailed to myself before the show only to be stumped trying to get into my email. I had been hacked not too long ago and changed ALL of my passwords in an effort to defeat the hackers. Of course, I couldn't remember any thing I had chosen as a new password. I was completely and utterly stumped. On top of that, my cell phone would NOT let me load the Maps function so that we could do a turn by turn directions as I only had one bar in the part of town we were in. It was frustrating and scary because we were not in a good part of town.

After 20 minutes of driving around we finally managed to find the arena and a parking spot but I had to change passwords again as soon as I got home. Hopefully I won't forget them now. *crosses fingers*

The one time I forgot my password was to Facebook - I was mad at my then boyfriend at the time and decided I didn't want him to have access to my Facebook account so I found a site online that would generate a random password - I could have sworn I had wrote it down someplace but I guess I didn't. Several months later, I realized how stupid it was for me to deny myself access to my own account, I had to go through several emails with Facebook as I couldn't remember the security answer I gave!
