Vintage New Year Clip Art - Lady with Champagne

I've had this Vintage New Year card for awhile now, and thought it was so cute. However, I didn't realize until I scanned it today, that the wreath has Pig Heads on it! (I guess I thought they were large flowers). A little disturbing!  Anyway... Happy 2012!! Wishing you all a joyful New Year!

  7. I guess it's because they symbolize Wealth, Prosperity and Luck. Anyway, not that cute! Thank you and happy 2012!

  8. When we lived in Germany the pig (especially in marzipan with a coin in its mouth) was considered very good luck on New Years and you gave and received these pigs. So maybe this photo is either from Germany (linking pigs, champagne and New Years) or a tradition brought over here :)

  9. The card sends a wish for prosperity. Maybe a wish for living high on the hog???

The German explanation is most likely, I think.

    Happy New Year, everyone!

  10. Eating pork and or pork and sourcrout(sp>)is supposed to bring good luck in the New Year if you eat it on New Years Day. Now I've skipped this meal for 61 years..no harm done However, I believe that the pig heads sybolizes the customs of pig or pork bringing luck. I would descretely add homeade folded flowers to cover the heads, LOL! Love your site!

  12. Kinda makes you wonder who thought that a pig's head wreath would look good on a postcard, doesn't it????!! Oh well, I bet none of us will ever look at it & not remember that they're pig heads & not large flowers LOL!!!
